Bait & Switch

My husband lost a filling and needed to see someone right away. I called and made an appointment after seeing offers on Aspen Nashville West website. The offer for free exam/xrays for new patients without insurance sounded good. We were charged. When questioned, they said not in Tennessee. But that is what your website offered! Crowns stating at $718, but was quoted $1175. I called and ask why a difference in price and was told crown $950 and the remainder is for build up of tooth. Called another area dentist and was quoted $595 plus a little extra for the build up. They said it would not be near $1000!

Asspen is just like a pawn shop. They take advantage of people in their time of need. Thieves.

On of my large silver fillings at 1/3 the price would be better than one of A$pen's made-in-China crowns. Their lab work is the pits.

It is good you left after being lied to about the exam and x-ray.

Many people are not so cautious. Then they have to pay of the crown, and pay for it to be done over again correctly at another dentist.

THINK ABOUT THIS! Who pays for all those expensive A$pen TV ads? Who pays for the layers of corporate management?

Who pays the leveraged buyout group that owns the operation? Who pays for the various fines A$pen has paid in settlements to state attorneys general?

PATIENTS DO! You don't save any money going to fleabag corporate outfits like this!

Aspen Dental did not notify me properly that my insurance didn't cover certain procedures and sent my account to Collections. Because of them I now have a collections history in my credit report that I just can't get rid of. They said they've notified me and I recall only receiving 1 letter. They were supposed to notify me and include that bill that wasn't covered in the credit account that they've provided me. I had the funds to cover it but didn't know it was being sent to collections. I've asked them to take it out of my credit report and they said they could not help me. Thanks a lot Aspen Dental

I when to Aspen dental because my lower bridge broke in half I went there because they advertise one day service they told me there was five different kinds I paid for the cheapest ones it took three weeks to get them made. Once I got them maythey fit tight longer I wore them theworst my mouth got sore. I finally got it fitting so it didn't hurt anymore but he still cannot eat anything because they made them completely wrong on that Molers and also in the front. I still can't chew right not even toast. ITook my old ones to my regular dentist six them and told me that there is not five different kinds of dentures-there's only two they charge me very high price for the ones I got. They gave me a price which my insurance paid part I paid the balance but every month I get a bill for something new that should've been included in the price of the price they gave me. Anybody out there make sure you check around before you go to Aspen because they are a big joke they must have amateurs making your dentures

First you say a "bridge," was broken, then you talk about a denture. Bridges and dentures are two very different things.

If you are talking about a denture, it is an easy matter to repair a denture that is broken in half in one hour, if I am not busy.

I do it all the time, and it costs under $200.

NOBODY can make a new denture in one day, no matter what the ads say. I think you got mixed up and heard an ad that claimed one-day REPAIRS.

I don't know any dentist that makes 5 types of dentures. There is the right way to make dentures, taking about 5 appointments, then there are shortcut ways that leave out important steps. A few dentists who make dentures right an use cheaper teeth and plastic, at a slightly reduced fee.

Making dentures is no easy task.

Many patients simply look at advertisements of crooks like A$pen, then seek out the cheapest price. Why on earth did you go to that sleazy joint if you had a "regular dentist" to start with???

I'll bet it was because you were trying to cheap out. Now look where that got you!

Twice I've walked in for my dental appt.and was asked for a ridiculous amount of money, never told anything about having to pay when I made appt because I've got credit. When I said just cancel the cleaning and keep my filling appt. I was told I couldn't do that. They will not do any dental work if cleaning isn't done. I've had two cleanings in six months. I think the cavity should be of importance, I guess money is. Thank you for caring.

You forget that doing unnecessary treatment is this gang's forte. Guess which treatment is most overprescribed?

Deep cleaning and root planings.

Most ordinary dentists, myself included, will fill a cavity on the first visit if that is what bugs the patient most. My advice is to leave this investor-owned, corporate clinic clown club and find such a dentist in your community. There is not shortage of them all over. The one place you will not find them is Fleabag outfits like A$pen.

The Massachusetts attorney general just forced these crooks to return $990,000 to Massachusetts patients last December, and to cease and desist some of their dishonest practices in your state.

If I were you, I would write a letter to the Massachusetts attorney general stating everything about your experience at A$pen. He would be very interested.

You thought they were honest and trustworthy? Why would anyone think that?

I guess you are one of those people who actually believe television commercials.

The question is, have you really learned your lesson?

Will you go to a reputable dentist the next time, or will you seek out some cheap denture advertising place like Affordable Dentures that sends their partial dentures to China to save money on fabrication?

Good partials take 5 appointments to make. They take a lot of planning and ALWAYS modifications to the existing teeth. They are difficult to construct. They don't come cheap.

As a well seasoned technician with 20+ years, I must say that your claims are frankly false. First I will say that as Affordable is a chop shop yes, however there are only a very few corporate dental companies that are that way, ALL of which are those that offer "same day dentures".

Aside from that, your claims of prosthetics made in China, please get your information correct because that sort of option (cast metal, crowns, and bridges) are all at the DOCTOR discretion, thus, if the DOCTOR chooses not to find a local lab for these services, they may be shipped.

However, ALL dentures and acrylic partials by these companies are made IN HOUSE by a technician IN THE OFFICE and NOT overseas. Please have enough respect for the profession to get it correct.

Aspen's cast partials and crowns do actually go to china to be made. They come back as total *** too.

I used to work there, it is horrible. Patients need to go to a real dentist.

Believe me, I respect my lab techs very highly . I have used the same INDEPENDENT lab techs for over 20 years.

After my employees, no one is more important to treat kindly than my lab techs.

Dentists at corporate clinics are almost never free to choose their own labs. I wasn't when I worked for Dental One long ago.

A former A$pen dentist wrote on this forum that his denture tech was an orthodontic lab tech that was trying to learn how to make dentures. He had never made any before, yet A$pen hired him to make dentures. Can you imagine that, with no knowledge of denture occlusion????

Fabricating dentures by a lab tech is a real art, and takes a lot of work to do right.

Fabricating partial denture frameworks is an even more demanding task. I went through a lot of labs before I found one that could do an outstanding job fabricating to my specifications.

So it takes over 3 weeks and no call, I had to call and find out what was going on. Now another 2 weeks to process the request before my check is sent out which can take another 10 days. Wow, I am so awed that a person can take a full time college schedule and work a full-time job. You must never sleep!

How motivated you must be.

It is a shame you don't live in New York or Massachusetts, both of which hammered A$pen recently for not refunding credit balances. The NY attorney general said they added miscellaneous charges to accounts to eat up credit balances so they never have to refund credit balances. What does this tell you? It is a company that is cash-strapped, living on the edge.

When interest rates go up, sleazy corporate clinics with high debt loads are going to be hurt. Many will go bankrupt.

The take home is to keep the pressure on A$pen to refund your money. Because it is investor-owned rather than dentist-owned, your Illinois Board of Dentistry cannot help you. This is an important reason to NEVER patronize a corporate chain clinic office again.

Just to let you know, no honest dentist wants full payment for a series of dental treatments up front.

Who wants this financial arrangement? Executives pushed by greedy investors of the leveraged buyout group that owns A$pen.

That's why we dentists are fighting corporate ownership of dental practices.

You should know by reading a few of these posts that difficulty in getting legitimate credit balances refunded is one of the top complaints against this chain. Good luck in what will be a long battle.

I had an agreement to pay 500$ up front for dentures. My husband was badly hurt at work after explaining this they agreed to accept 200 down and let me pay the rest out. I had all my teeth pull got the temp pair and after two adjustments was told bring 300.00 more in or we will not see you. I now have dentures that will not fit they refuse to adjust as swelling has went down and my bottom keep falling out. I am refused an appt. They changed the payment agreement only after I had all my teeth removed and now I am left screwed basically. Reporting to better business bureau as well as dental association.

Dental Association can't do a thing. All a dental association can do is kick a member out.

Corporations cannot be members anyway.

Your usual remedy is a state board of dentistry. Again, you are out of luck because you chose a CORPORATE-OWNED, not a DENTIST-OWNED, clinic. The worst remedy a board has is to revoke dental licenses. Corporate execs don't have dental licences anyway.

Sorry to say, good dentures cannot be made for a pittance.

Mine cost $1700 each and are worth every penny.

Look, you made a bad mistake going to a sleazy clinics owned by investors, that advertises on TV. Nothing good will come out of that combination.

Find an honest dentist, competent in doing dentures, that owns his own practice. Don't even think of trying another fleabag clinic like Affordable Dentures, unless you want to throw away even more money.

First off, you are not only pompous and arrogant, you are also incorrect in many statements. These corporate companies ALL offer the opportunity for the dentist to buy the pratcice making it a POP (physician owned prartice) rather than simply a corporate run office.

Know what you are saying is true before you spat on peoples professions.

Secondly, your $1700 each is a load of bull because I as a lab private owner, know exactly how much each type costs swell as what gets charged and even more so, I know how horribly conceeded private dentists, like yourself, price gauge patients who have been convinced private dentists are always better. Stop your slander and put your ego in check.

Lab techs know better than a dentist what happens at aspen ripoff dental? All the dentists at aspen is owned by the corporate office no matter what they tell him.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1017671

Obviously you haven't a clue as to how DSO is structured. Yes, technically a PC is "owned" by dentists to make the sham look legal to state boards.

But the PC typically owns nothing. The PC grants a perpetual contract to A$pen to "manage" the office. What businessman in his right mind gives a vendor a perpetual contract for ANY business service?

The New York attorney general saw through these scams and ordered A$pen to stop, at least in New York State. He ordered, amongst other things, for A$pen to at least have an identifiable bank account for each office, instead of funneling all the cash to corporate.

Of course dentists charge more for dentures than the lab costs you charge.

Do surgeons charge more for surgeries than the cost of the sutures, surgical drains, sponges, and implants they use in their surgeries? *** right they do. They must charge for their labor, just like dentists must charge for their labor.

Fabricating a denture typical takes about six hours of my labor. PLUS the cost of custom tray material, wax, and very expensive impression material.

Sorry this happened. I see it more and more.

A cleaning for $75 in a private practice or a $25 special with FREE x-rays from a corporate chain that turns into $800 of "necessary" periodontal work. A $1,000 crown in a private practice or a $599 crown from a corporate chain that turns into 3 or 4 crowns, gum treatment and root canals for $4,500. Get ready for a bumpy ride. A two tiered system is being created right under your nose and you should expect this to get worse.

Dental students are graduating with $400k-500K of school debt and most banks won't lend them money to start or buy a private practice without experience. Supply and equipment companies are consolidating and buying each other out to increase profits by increasing your costs. Procedures and documentation get more and more complicated. Government regulation has become so onerous that to run the business it takes teams of people (that need to make a living) or one must outsource so that only larger offices or those with higher fees can survive as solo or small groups.

Insurance companies negotiate different pay rates for the "volume business" and make millions taking the spread. Aspen is owned by Wall Street. NOT doctors. There is an entire layer of corporate people that look to take the big piece of the pie out of the bottom line and they make a cr*p ton of money.

They give huge money to schools for access to the students. They sign new grads with huge loan payments, pay them on commission with big promises of autonomy and one-sided contracts and hang them out to dry if anything goes wrong while they tell them how to practice (read "sell"). There are plenty more to take their place if they don't make enough profit for the office or any procedure goes wrong - that's why patients who have problems are ignored. The corporation can't be held accountable and they have enough money to make things go away.

Everything will fall on the dentist whom they conveniently cut loose. The dentists are bound contractually to do what the corp says or risk breach of contract and potential board problems so they must quietly go away for the most part. They usually need to move and practice in another area sure to restrictive clauses in the contract that won't allow them to practice near the old office. All that money for advertising "affordable dentistry" comes mostly from over diagnosis, over treatment and bundling additional packages into treatment all with "easy" financing.

Unfortunately the majority of the public is being pulled into these chains and more and more of them are popping up. For most, I think this will become your only option as they corner the market.

Stick with a reputable private practice with good reviews and a good reputation (preferable from people you know and trust) as long as you can. It will be cheaper for you in the long run.

So basically what happened to pharmacist is now happening to dentist.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1013500

They are trying to make dentists into big-box stores like pharmacists. They tried it in the 1980s, and it did not work.

The main difference is doing it in dentistry is ILLEGAL in most states, where only dentists can own practices.

That makes it easy to discipline dentists if they misbehave. If they lose their license, the office has to close.

So *** outfits like A$pen skirt the law.

They recruit dentist fake owners and claim A$pen has been granted a never-ending contract to "manage" the joints. As if any sane business owner would grant a contract in perpetuity.

Write your state legislator and demand that tests for dental practice ownership be codified, so this sort of fraud can be exposed and shut down.

Guest

Whether aged 4 or 94, they will rip off young and old alike via overtreatment.

That is why most times it does not save any money going to a clinic on an "insurance list." The fees might be lower, but you don't save anything, because treatment is "upcoded" ande unnecessary treatment is recommended for you.

The first thing to look for in a dentist is honesty. The second is competence. Usually you will find neither in a corporate sleaze clinic like A$pen.

Aspen Dental...NOT worth it

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Where do I begin. I scheduled my free exams back in May, the point was just to have a general teeth cleaning done. I was told I had to make separate trip and appointment to have my teeth cleaned, that I couldn't schedule it all at once. When I completed my exams I scheduled my cleaning for a month later. Only TWO days out from my cleaning appointment I receive a call that they need to reschedule me because the doctor had to leave early...WHAT?! I had been waiting for this appointment for a month. So I reschedule and conveniently the next available appointment wasn't for another month and a half! I also had to schedule a few fillings so I scheduled that a week later following the new cleaning appointment. When my cleaning appointment date arrived I got there right on time at 5:30. I sat there in the waiting room for an entire hour! At the end of my appointment they told me that they would see me for my filling appointment the following week at 7pm....NO my appointment was for 6:45...at what point did that change and why? I politely ignored the change in time and agreed to being there then. THE DAY BEFORE my filling appointment I get a call that they need to reschedule me because they are no longer open that late (conveniently they close at 7pm now...interesting) SO now I have to reschedule again and the earliest they can get me in is another month and half away. Annoyed at this I ask if I can just receive my paperwork and go elsewhere...they tell me I have to come into the office to pick them up, that is a huge inconvenience since it is a half hour drive one way. I WOULD NOT recommend Aspen Dental. I think their services are just okay, and their customer service and methods and way of doing business are terrible. They are a chain dentist and it shows. Definitely wish I had gone elsewhere. Not to mention the doctor who saw me insulted my teeth. I know they are a little crooked at the bottom but I don't need you to comment on it, it was a little rude.

Well, what did you expect from a sleazebag investor-owned corporate dental chain? Running on time?

Honoring appointments? Why don't you tell me you expect quality treatment as well, or wine and cheese before your appointments?

You probably understand by now that this chain takes dentists and hygienists right out of school, pays them a pittance, and double or triple books them so they will be busy every second of the day. The important thing is billing revenues, not punctuality.

When they run late from too many patients, as they almost do, guess who gets bumped?

The patients with the last appointments, of course.

Should have sought an honest and competent dentists from friends and acquaintances, instead of insurance lists and TV ads. There of plenty of good dentists in private practice who will serve you honestly and punctually.

You got to remember the heritage of this joint is a yank-all-teeth-and fabricate-cheap-dentures business model. It has only slightly evolved from this despicable business model.

Dentists are coached to "sell' more expensive dentures made of a nylon-like material, which are in fact inferior to acrylic dentures.

Got to keep the dentures coming to keep lab production up.

If saving your teeth is your goal, this investor-owned clip joint is not where you should be going.

There are plenty of competent, caring, and honest dentists in private practice. Don't EVER select your dentist based on TV ads or insurance lists.

Aspen Dental Appointment Review from Buffalo, New York

Today I had an appointment at the Aspen Dental on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Tonawanda New York. My appointment was at 4:30 p.m. I get a call from Aspen Dental at 3 p.m. cancelling saying the doctor is sick. This is the second time I've been called with no notice that my appointment has been cancelled after waiting a month just to get an exam and cleaning. I've had so many experiences with this company cancelling appointments, the dr not being able to perform the procedure, wasting mine and their time and I'm completely fed up. The workers there complain about their job the entire time, and the receptionist are very unprofessional. I switched to a new dental company today, I couldn't take it anymore.

Could be that the dentist just got disgusted and quit. It has one of the lowest job satisfaction ratings of any corporate clinic out there.

You want a dentist that respect your time and is punctual?

An investor-owned corporate clown club like this one is the wrong place to go. Don't expect similar corporate joints like Great Expressions, Coast, or Affordable Care to be any better.

Time to find a private practice dentist that will treat you right. There are plenty of guys and gals like that wherever you go in the USA.
