Bait and switch

I was looking for a new dentist with more insurance options. I went to Aspen Dental because they accept a lot more plans than the local providers. Since they have the free exam, this seemed like a good way to make a fresh start. I called to double check on their insurance options, and the person on the phone somewhere in OZ told me that they would do the exam and then I would talk to someone so I could decide on the most appropriate plan. I was aggressive in making the appointment then and there. So I get in for my appointment and they called me back an hour late. After the exam, I talk to a guy who reminded me of a pushy used car sales person. He had an answer (or excuse) for every issue I raised except for one. He only named two insurance plans. He had never heard of one national company I asked about. I had already called the company to verify Aspen was in their network. So I knew the answer before I asked the question. I have never been to a medical provider where one goes directly from the exam to the business office. They assume you will accept what they say you need and they only question left is what path you want to pay. At least they should be prepared for all insurance/discount plans if they want people to be able to be able to afford what they want to do to you.

sounds like what i went thru today. I know my teeth aren't in the best shape, but but the dentist barely looked at them physically, and has never seen me before, and told me i needed a whole new set of teeth (dentures vs my real teeth).

They too sent me straight to the office manager and offer me two plans, one for 16 visits to fix the problems and one for partials and dentures for half the price of the other; both which were still $5-8+ thousand dollars I don't have AFTER INSURANCE. After reading so many bad reviews, i'm definitely going for a second opinion!!!

Guest

A$pen accepts more fleabag dental plans with ridiculously low fees because it has not trouble planning overtreatment, upcoding treatment fees, or even insurance fraud.

When patients select dentists by insurance plan "in-network" lists, they usually select the sorriest and most desperate dentists out there. No dentist signs up for plans like Cigna DMO, for instance.

It is a guaranteed money loser if patients are treated humanely and professionally.

My suggestion is to get off the crumby dental plan and use a FLEX plan or HSA to pay for your dental visits. Then you will have the freedom to to to whatever dentist you wish.

Guest

Aspen views their patients as pieces of meat on a conveyor belt to be trained to the car salesman office for a good old fashion rip off. Run away.

Today is Thursday 3/31/2016. I had an apt at 10:45 am. I arrived at 10:30 to do the necessary paperwork for new patients. I was not called til 11:55 I had X-rays and saw the dr for advice on what needed to be done. That was all fine and good. Then I was sent to talk to the business office lady about the amount due and what my insurance would cover. Yes surprise I have insurance. She said I would be out of pocket 550$ because I had to have the deep cleaning and my ins didn't cover that kind of cleaning. I ask her if I could just not have the deep cleaning and have the one my ins covered 100%. She said no if I didn't have that deep cleaning the dentist would not do any fillings or even work on my teeth at all. Look I'm a medical technologist and I know a lot of things. I know that I am the consumer here and they could have accommodated me if they wanted too. I have ins and they would have gotten paid. I would of been willing to sign a disclaimer about the hazards attached to not having the deep cleaning. But that was not offered to me in any form. They said they couldn't do anything for me without the deep cleaning. No even the extraction that is almost an abscess. Your company needs to be consumer minded. People are tired of paying and paying for things they have ins for but because it's a different "kind" of cleaning it's not covered. I hope these issues will be addresses for future customers. Because without customers you have no company. I was very very upset when I left uncontrollably crying. Because it takes all my strength to make myself go to the dentist. What a waste of time. The so called office manager was recruited from mcdonald's or the local 7-11 gas station. They force the manager to suck every dollar they can from all patients.

Deborah,

If you truly had type II, III, or IV periodontitis (which includes pocketing), a regular cleaning would have done you no good. Did you truly need a scaling and root planing?

Without examining you I cannot say for sure, but odds are with these crooks you did not.

Here is how the game is played. They participate in foolish insurance plans with fees so so it is impossible to turn a profit. So they "upcode" procedures. A simple extraction becomes a surgical extraction.

A limited exam becomes a complete exam. AND EVERY SIMPLE CLEANING BECOMES A SCALING AND ROOT PLANING, WHETHER NEEDED (OR APPROPRIATE) OR NOT!

Like most patients, you probably went to these clowns because they were "participating providers" for you insurance plan. As you can see by now, no honest dentists mess with these risky-*** dental plans. Please forget Aspen and other joints like it, and search for a dentist who owns his own private practice and will treat you honestly.

In fact, it may be to your advantage to drop the dental plan and pay him by cash. At least you won't be swindled and overrated!

I went to Aspen Dental on the fact that they accepted my dental insurance. My visit was for standard x-rays and cleaning. Before I knew what was happening an Oral Hygienist was asked to check my gums. The next thing that I know they are talking over $1 thousand dollars for treatment. I settled for a payment in advance of $ 300 dollars in advance. Upon my next visit I was given a statement and asked in front of everyone in the office at the time if I wanted to pay this balance? that I did not owe. In talking with their insurance lady again she said that she remembered our conversation and would take care of the balance. Today I tried to meet with her and she was too busy and would call me. I still have not had a call from her.

First of all, when you visit a new dentist, they HAVE TO do an INITIAL exam and x-ray series (if you did not bring a recent x-rays.) The initial exam at a new dentist and the regular exam and cleaning at your old dentist are two completely different things entirely.

Can't comment on whether you needed that expensive root scaling or not, but this fleabag chain's favorite trick is to upcode routine cleanings to the much more expensive variety, whether warranted or not.

It is what you get when you put Wall Street shyster investors in charge of dental clinics instead of dentists.

If your dental insurance only allows shyster outfits like A$pen, you got a junk dental plan that is not worth a dime. Find a REAL dentist who owns his own practice and treats your honestly.

Warranty my ***

Went in today, had rough margin on crown they did in late 2014, they refused to look at it unless I paid 119 bucks for visit because I have no insurance. After meeting with business manager was told have to pay for emergency visit (made appt two weeks ago), and they could not see me for free because i had failed to do proper maintenance (defined as not getting a cleaning (extra special deep expensive one) every 6 months since I got the crown done. So no fix, told them I get better warranty service on a battery from Walmart and stormed out.

What I wonder is if you really needed all the treatment they performed on you. But I don't understand something. Why can't you just put your balance on Genesis now But probably there is a better deal than A$pen's high interest credit schemes anyway.

I have been to this location 4 times in the last year each time I was extremely displeased with the time management and service I received as a patient. On my last visit I spent an hour and 45 minutes in the waiting room. I then made the decision I would no longer be a patient at aspen dental. Today is Wednesday and I unfortunately made an appointment for extreme pain due to a cracked tooth and what appears to be an infection in my gum. I hoped to have a better experience as I did not want to see a brand new dentist with this severe issue. I should have trusted my instinct. My appointment was set for 10am. At 10:53am I was taken back for x-rays. There are 4 receptionist employees behind the desk. Neither the technician who took me back for x-rays, or one of the receptionists apoligized for the wait or even acknowledged it. After the unfriendly technician finished my x-rays I was advised to go BACK to the waiting room where I would be called in a few moments to see the dentist. It has now been 17 minutes since then, and here I sit still in the waiting room. I find it extremely unprofessional the lack of time management that is shown at Aspen Dental. There is no consideration for their patients. As a working professional it is a chore in itself to get away from the office, and it is extremely disheartening to have my time wasted and not cared about or acknowledged. I would never recommend this dentist office to ANYONE under any circumstance. As for me, this will definitely be my last visit to aspen dental for good.

You have been disappointed by this chain FOUR TIMES and you still went back? Lady, you got more patience than I do.

Of course they don't care anything about your time. Executives force office managers to double and triple book the young dentists. The whole business model is about extracting as much money from as many patients as possible. What did you think??

That they actually cared about patient welfare????

Gosh, Florida has two dental schools and dentists all over the place.

There aren't any shortage of dentists in Florida. So why don't you find a decent dentist and stick to him?

People don't take them to court because A$pen has more legal firepower than any patient can ever afford.

FOUR state attorneys-general have taken action against them so far. A$pen just pays the hefty fines, and goes back to the business of ripping patients off.

It is just a cost of doing business for them.

State dental boards cannot do much because they are overworked and underfunded.

It would take a fortune of state lawyers to stop A$pen from illegally owning dental practices.

It would help if more patients read these reviews instead of believing ever lying TV commercial the dental chains put on the *** tube. Unfortunately, TV is reality for a lot of patients.

I wish I would of seen all these complaints before going to this poor excuse of a dental service! They are so pushy to sell you the most work without asking your permission .They really screwed up my tops, and they were not the ones that needed fixed.....thank god i kept my old set.....thinking of trying 1 more time to get some satisfaction, if not gonna speak to a lawyer.....Tell everyone you know about this place and maybe they will go out of business forever.

They haven't got the time to do legwork like consult with your physician about medication. The young docs who work there are unbelievably overbooked by their non-dentist corporate masters.

They don't have time for lunch, must less calling physicians about medication regimen and drug interactions. The goal of A$pen dentists is 1. Keep from getting fired until they find a better job, and 2. Make as much commission as possible before the leave to fund a practice of their own.

Patient welfare is a distant third in priority.

My only question to you: as an intelligent man who has achieved much in the corporate world, why on earth would you even think about going to a third-rate corporate dental chain where you would have a new dentist every 6 months?

Were the promises made in lying TV ads so convincing in your mind? Or do you have a rinky-*** dental plan that mandates use of fleabag outfits like A$pen?

I went to aspen dental in january and got set up to have my teeth pulled and get full set of dentures. After they did the check with my insurance and the carrington plan they showed me what i owed out of pocket so i got that financed through fortiva so i had my dental work done on 1/15/16. Everything was good then in march when i went in, i told them about a bill i got and they said that they havent recieved the payme.t from insurance yet and they said that wasn't unusual. Well i had to go in april. I inquired about the bill and a lady told me that she was going to check into it and i never heard anything from her. Low and behold i get a bill and it says final notice. So i had to go there today 6/7/16 @ 9:00 and before i left i had to make an appointment and the girl told me that the insurance wasnt going to pay due to there was a hold on the acct and she said it was lifted on 2/5/16 and my question is why didnt they check this before? I could have waited a couple more weeks! So i asked her if we could put this on the fortiva acct, fortiva said no cause it was longer 30 days. So i asked if i could pay 100 dollars and she said yes, but i changed my mind and asked her if $50.00 would be ok, she acted like it bo/hered her. Then i asked her if i could pay 50 a month and she told me that i had to make some kind of a payment every week and that might keep me out of collections then as she was making out my reciept she made a phone call and was talking to them and handed me the paper and not so much as a thank you or anything.she was extremely rude and i feel like i shouldnt have to pay this since they told. Me all i had to pay was what i financed. Debra Throgmorton

Debra,

1. Why is it that you did not get a second opinion when this viper's pit recommended ripping out all your precious teeth?

2. Why did you go to a sleazy Wall-Street owned corporate clinic, instead of a regular dentist?

Of course you are having billing problems. Employee turnover at A$pen is so rapid that the environment is often barely-controlled chaos. It is unusual NOT to having billing problems at A$pen.

Aspen's most common ploy is to treatment plan extracting all teeth, whether a good idea or not, and putting in third-rate dentures, maxing patients out on credit card debt.

You fell for the ploy.

Count on spending thousands more at a decent dentist to place implants to reverse the damage that was done.

In the future, remember to seek professional care based on reputation, not TV commercials. Write your state legislator and demand the state dental board develop ownership tests so Wall Street sleaze cannot own dental clinics in your state.

Why is it that every person who goes to Aspen dental needs their teeth all pulled out?

Root planing and scaling

About a year ago I went to Aspen Dental for a cleaning. I was told that I needed a root planing and scaling at a cost of three thousand dollars. I was dumbfounded. They wouldn't even clean my teeth at that time. I said I would think about it. A few months later I went to another dentist, one recommended by a lawyer I have know for fifteen years. That dentist and his hygienist independently told me that my gums were fine and went ahead with the cleaning. Always get a second opinion for such an expensive and invasive procedure.

This is aspen's old trick of making you pay for scaling and root planning that is not needed +antibiotic perio therapy that is not needed + $150 unnecessary electric tooth brush + expensive follow up appoints. All for cash up front or huge credit card debt. Well known scam by aspen.

Guest

Always get a second opinion- when you are being treated in a Wall-Street owned corporate clinic. Got to keep those private equity investors satisfied, you know.

Glad you wised up and found a good private dentist.

Some periodontal patients do indeed scaling and root planing.

But A$pen's favorite scam is "upcoding" simple cleanings to scaling and root planing.

Now you know. Warn all your friends and coworkers.

Do not go to this joke of a place!!!!! I did a Google search when looking for a place to go to have some COSMETIC work done on one of my teeth! Intially I was drawn to it because they offered free x rays! I went in and voiced my concerns and showed them exactly what I wanted to have repaired! They were enthusiastic about fixing it and taking my money. Cost was pretty high for the work but I figured since I didn't have to pay for the X-rays. It wasn't too bad. Dr. Patel worked on the tooth and I was a satisfied customer. (I had some cosmetic bonding. Minor chip on my front tooth.) Less than two weeks after I had the work done. The bonding broke off while flossing! I couldn't believe it! After the cost of procedure I thought it would lost much longer. I made appointment the following week. After waiting an hour to see the Dr. the office manager came in to see me. She said I would responsible for a sitting fee which I told her I felt was crazy after being inconvinced to come back in for repair. She waived the fee and I waiting for the doctor another thirty min. He came in asked to see my teeth. At that time he said the work was still intact. He then went on to tell me it looked fine and that he didn't see anything wrong. He said he put a full on the cavity! On my paperwork and receipt there is no information on fill for cavity. So it was a surprise that he's now saying I had a cavity! But to my knowledge I was just having a cosmetic procedure. He could tell I was unhappy and confused. He then went on to tell me to go the dentist who repaired it in the past and to refund my money and get me out of there. I waited another hour to get proof that the refund had been processed. This was an absolute nightmare! I should've read the reviews prior to visiting!

Consider yourself very lucky. Almost NO ONE ever gets a refund from this corporate clown club.

Bonding is unpredictable.

Sometimes it lasts many years, sometimes it lasts no time at all.

It depends on the patient's *** and grinding and clenching habits. If bonding will not hold, the next step is a porcelain veneer or crown

Had my wisdom teeth pulled about three weeks ago. I have been in pain every since then. Also, I can still feel a piece of the teeth where none should be. Not knowing how long the pain is supposed to last, with it being my first wisdom tooth pulled and knowing the horror stories I heard, I thought it would take a while. Finally, today I could not take it anymore. I went to Aspen dental in excruciating pain only to be told they can't see me for two weeks at the earliest. Talk about pissed; on my way to emergency.

Little bits of bone make their way through the gums after many extractions, particularly on the lower. It is no big deal to take a bone nipper and clip them off.

It takes 5 minutes. Not sure why these monkeys at Aspen wouldn't do that simple procedure. Probably because they got your money already and don't care.

There is fresh new sheep coming in the front door after seeing the TV commercials, and they are just waiting to be fleeced for more money. Therefore, sweetheart, you are old news to these crooks.

Aspen Dental Dental Services Review from Doylestown, Pennsylvania

If you are reading this, DO NOT GO TO ASPEN DENTAL!!! I have clean, healthy teeth, get a cleaning twice a year from my dentist. I made a consultation appointment for laswr teeth whitening with Aspen. I arrived waited a breif period. I got brought into a room for xrays, which i was never told about, nor did I need. I refused them and told them I was not in for xrays, i also told them that they should have my dental history in my chart that the girl had in her hand. I was then asked what I was there for. Really? How unprepared and unprofessional to see a patient and know nothing. I work in healthcare. You get busy, you don't have a second to glance at a chart, but at least know the basics?!! I then told her i made an appointment on the phone about a month ago for laser teeth whitening and that I had actually called tje Portland, Maine office, in which I was directed to the South Portland, Maine office because apparently South Portland was the only office with that type of technology in the state of Maine. When the girl came back after "speaking to the dentist" and getting my chart, I apparently had no chart there with them. I also was in an office that did not offer laser technology. The dentist came in the room finally and by this time I was pretty annoyed and really confused. Nothing like getting the run around to make a patient feel comfortable. I strted asking the dentists questions, he explained with quote a short attitude that I needed an exam because I was a new patient. Okay, fine. He then told me that it was my responsibility to bring my chart with me. Which I was never told on the phone, I was told they would retrieve it. He then said if i had never seen an exam kit theny dentiat was not doing their job. I found that very offensive since this entire experince has been all about money to this corporation. This guy then for all of five seconds looks at my teeth and scraped a couple for what? I have no clue because he said he wasn't cleaning them, juay "examining." I pressed him for information on the whitening because that IS what I wanted to learn about and potentionally get done. He told me he did nkt know anything about it because he doesn't use it. COME ON. I cannot imagine what they are tellibg people who need dentures? Oh, sorry I know nothing because I don't have them. These people should NOT be taking care of the teeth of anyone and taking advantage of people who don't know any better. Please stay away from this place! My experience was awful. Not to mention after it all, the dentist sat in the room woth me writing forever. Not speaking one word making it really awkward. Do not work with people of you have no people skills!!!

First of all "laser whitening" is a scam. The laser does nothing of value. The chemical does all the work.

Second of all, if you have a regular dentist you go to twice a year, why the heck did you go to a corporate *** show like A$pen?

Look, I think you have a mistaken concept of dental treatment. It is not like a Burger King where you order from a menu and "have it your way." You MUST be examined first. And part of EVERY exam are x-rays. If you did not bring x-rays with you, someone MUST take them.

When a patient comes in with a specific problem like a toothache, naturally we can do a LIMITED exam and an x-ray of only the area in question. But after the problem is resolved, we must do a complete exam. But of course your regular dentist did a complete exam and recall exam, which makes it silly that you went somewhere else for tooth whitening. Every dentist I know does tooth whitening. A$pen does not have any monopoly on it.

He is just another zombie dentist working for aspen and praying for the day to end. He is rude because he will leave aspen in the dust the second he gets another job offer. Aspen is the worst place to go for anything other than getting ripped off.

We had to go the next day to contents which is 1 1/2 hrs drive to get his teeth pulled. We were not given a follow up appt although I asked for one. With ten teeth pulled I have never been to a dentist with no *** Prior to all this we had to do all the foot work getting medical clearance because Aspen said they never got the paperwork from the other doctors. The other MD assured us they had sent the information. My husband had complications we went back to the Newnan office 2 days later and were told he had to go to the hospital or make an appt for the next week and there was nothing else they could do. The receptionist continued to say we're full today you can go to the hospital for your pain we can't help you today you can make an appointment next week. Guess *** is "follow-up." Who would know? Who uses this abbreviation? Nobody that I know. Or is it shorthand for dirty words?

With obvious medical conditions, don't know why you want your teeth pulled. Every time you are off blood thinners it increases the chance of an embolus forming. Seems like you would want to take care of your teeth, not have them yanked out.

This is the sort of nonsense you get from inexperienced young dentists double and triple booked with patients by greedy corporate executives. Why did you go there? Were the TV ads so convincing in your mind?

Can't imagine that Newnan has a shortage of dentists in private practice. Few places do. Why not ditch the corporate clinic habit, and find a competent and experienced dentist who owns there own practice.

Aspen Dental - Dentures Review from Lexington, South Carolina

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I to bought a set of dentures from Aspen Dental. It became one of the biggest headaches I have ever had. The "dentist "was an Asian, who could barely speak English. I don't know where they got her or if she actually was a dentist. She kept on insisting that I needed oral surgery to remove a small bone in my lower jaw. Not to be clear, I was already wearing dentures and this was a replacement set. The only reason I came here instead of the normal clinic I use.was the fact that they were booked up 2 months ahead and could not get me in. I am a full time RV'ER and I knew that I would not be back in town then so I used Aspen. My former dentists NEVER told me I would need oral surgery for my lower jaw,and the lower plate he made fit perfectly The Aspen dentist went ahead and cast a lower plate for me on my insistence. She was not happy with.my decision. The plate was made and I picked it up the next day.it would not fit my top plate and hurt like ***. I agreed to a new upper plate.the next day I received them and was surprised how well they fit. The lower plate not to well. She kept on insisting on having the bone cut out. Now I have already paid $550.00 in cash and Aspen charged me an additional $700.00 for the upper plate. This wher.i lost it and told the person in charge that I was not happy. .she also didn't care. Usually I pay cash for everything I purchase, however something in my brain encouraged me to let Aspen finance the $700.00. I had the feeling that they would not correct the lower plate and they didn't. I finally got out my Dremal hand grinder and worked out the spots that hurt. Funny it was not a problem. I was able to eat with then until I could get back in to see a dentist at my usual clinic they made me a replacement lower plate for $175.00. No surgery was mentioned. Lower plate fit perfectly with my other upper. In closing Aspen came across as a company that is 100% profit and 0% patient care. They kept sending me a bill for the balance, so after a year of this nonsense I went to their office and gave the back the lower plate that I could not use. They were PI**ED off and I was laughing my *** off. I left the plate on the managers desk. Sorry for this review being so long, but I wanted to be clear on the bad service and even worse customer service. Foot note. None of this would not have happened if my dog hadn't chewed up my original lower plate.

I had the same lady and I had told her I thought I had a lose crown and to check it at cleaning and she said it was fine. Within a week the crown fell off.

:(. I did not feel she knew what she was doing.

Same happened to me except worse. Now everytime we drive by I start throwing up in my husband's car. We now have to take to long way around town just to avoid seeing aspen and throwing up.

Aspen is a rippoff craphole. Please don't be too rough on the dentist he is probably close to committing suicide working in this terrible hole for scammers.

You don't "buy a set of dentures" like you buy a lawn mower from Sears. You have them custom fabricated for your mouth via the following steps to make a GOOD denture:

1.

Initial impressions in alginate.

2. Fabricate custom final impression trays in lab.

3. Final impressions in custom trays.

4. Fabricate baseplates and occlusal rims in lab.

5.

Make a face bow transfer to mount upper cast in articulator. 6. Make a *** record, deciding on the vertical dimension that would work for the patient. 7.

Contour the wax rims so the lab tech knows where to put the teeth. 8. Study photos of a patient in their youth to see what their original teeth looked like. 9.

Select appropriate mold and color of teeth. Use QUALITY teeth from a reputable manufacturer. 10 Have lab tech set teeth. 11.

Try-in teeth in wax, verify patient ***. Make new *** record if necessary. 12. In lab, boil out wax and cure acrylic in mold.

13. In lab, adjust for processing errors. Break denture out of mold, clean up, and polish. 14.

Insert dentures in mouth. Remount in articulator and adjust ***. Then follow up with several adjustment appointments. Does all of this sound like it can be done in a couple of appointments really cheaply?

It can't. You are delusional if you think Aspen or any other third rate denture mill can do it in a day when you pull up in your RV.

You will never know what good dentures are. All you want is cheap dentures made in a jiffy with most of the important steps left out.
